HAUNTED HOUSE

haunted house romanceopoly cards

Lets dive in to monsters and spooky stuff! In the Haunted House challenge you have two options, either read a monster romance, or find something a little spooky and give it a try.

If you aren’t quite sure what a monster romance is, it’s basically a romance where one (or more) of the players in the romance are considered taboo, ugly and non-humanoid. In the dark you know they’re a monster. Think orcs, minotaurs, spider monsters, krakens and any other scary monster you can think of (and then kinda wanna bang.)

But, if monster romances aren’t for you, try something spooky. This is fairly subjective, what ever you consider to be spooky you can read for this challenge. Maybe it has ghosts and hauntings in it. Maybe it just has a really eerie and creepy atmosphere. If you read the blurb of a book and think “damn, that sounds spooky” then it fits the challenge!

Genre only challenge

If you’re doing the genre only version of the challenge, pick any LGBTQ+ romance book of your choosing! For more LGBTQ+ romance book recommendations take a look at our LGBTQ+ romance page on Under the Covers book blog.

deceived-by-the-gargoyles-lillian-lark

Deceived by the Gargoyles
by Lillian Lark

Available on Kindle Unlimited

Publisher’s synopsis

A curvy librarian looking to start a family, a clan of gargoyles, and the deception that starts it all.

My family has always found me lacking. From the way I dress, how I look, to the type of magic I have. My family name is full of pomp and prestige, and I want nothing to do with it.
I’m a witch that knows how to set a goal and I have one in mind.

I want a real family.

Dating is a travesty. All the suitors I meet are looking for a connection to the family name I left behind. I need help.
Enter the matchmaker. It seems too good to be true that I can give her the list of traits I want in a partner and have my deepest desire answered, but I’m out of options.

Love comes along in the most unexpected ways.

From the very first moment I meet Elliot Bramblewick, I have hope. But he’s tricky.
I’m not expecting him to be hiding two other mates. Mates who are as alarmed and intrigued by my presence as I am by theirs.
He thinks I’m a perfect fit for them, but can I open my heart and discard my list long enough to see if this is the family I’m looking for?

None of my lists and plans prepared me for being courted by three gargoyles.

His Human Nanny
by Michele Mills

Available on Kindle Unlimited

Publisher’s synopsis

My indentured servitude is almost over and freedom is a heartbeat away!

Until some alien guy buys me because he needs a nanny, quick. What? I’m not even good with kids. I’ve never changed a diaper in my life. But the beings at the employment agency won’t listen. “Hew-mans are hot right now. Everyone wants a hew-man nanny.” Great. And since there isn’t another human available…I’m hired on the spot.

Yay, me.

And on day one of my new job I’m having a panic attack because I finally meet my new boss and he looks like Satan himself. No lie. Black horns, red skin and glinting silver-tipped claws. He even has a barbed tail, a forked tongue, and he breathes fire. This guy is terrifying, and his children look exactly like him.

*heart palpitations* *hyperventilating*

And yet, as I’m caring for these strangely adorable infants and gazing longingly at my crazy-rich boss as he cradles his twin babies in his huge, muscular arms…my traitorous heart goes pitter-patter and my body heats up like lava.

Oh no.

And I begin to wonder—have I sold my soul to the devil?

darkhouse-karina-halle

Darkhouse
by Karina Halle

Available on Kindle Unlimited

Publisher’s synopsis

Perry Palomino seems like your average twenty-something girl on the surface. She’s had bad luck dating, her job sucks, and she’s disillusioned by her place in life, not sure exactly what she wants or where she’s even going.

She also sees ghosts, which makes things extra complicated, especially when she’d do anything to be normal.

But normal people don’t go exploring an abandoned and supposedly haunted lighthouse on the Oregon coast, where she ends up getting the attention of Dex Foray, an enigmatic producer who wants to exploit her talent for seeing the dead on his webseries.

At first, Perry’s not sure she wants to work with Dex on his amateur ghost-hunting show. He’s cocky, sarcastic, mysterious, and perhaps a little disturbed, not to mention aggravatingly sexy. But the more Perry works alongside Dex, her sanity tested at every turn, the more she realizes that falling for this man might just be the scariest thing of all.

Sometimes the ghosts we really need to fear are the ones that live in our pasts.

wicked-as-they-come-delilah-s-dawson

Wicked as they Come
by Delilah S. Dawson

Publisher’s synopsis

When nurse Tish Everett forced open the pesky but lovely locket she found at an estate sale, she had no idea she was answering the call of Criminy Stain, from the far off land of Sang. He’d cast a spell for her, but when she’s transported right to him, she’s not so sure she’s ready to be under the spell of another man. (It didn’t go so well last time with controlling, abusive, domineering Jeff.) If only Criminy wasn’t so deliciously rakish….

Half the inhabitants of Sang are Pinkies—human—and the other half are Bludmen, who in Tish’s world would be called vampires. But they don’t mess with any of the bat/coffin/no sunlight nonsense. They’re rather like you and me, just more fabulous, long living, and mostly indestructible. (They’re also very good kissers.) But when the evil Mayor of Manchester (formerly Bludchester) redoubles his efforts to rid Sang of the Bludmen once and for all, stealing Tish’s locket in hopes of traveling back to her world himself for reinforcements, Criminy and Tish must battle ghosts, sea monsters, wayward submarines, a secret cabal, and thundering Bludmares to get the locket back and allow Tish to return home…but has she found love with Criminy? Could she stay in Sang forever?

The Year of the Witching
by Alexis Henderson

Publisher’s synopsis

In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet’s word is law, Immanuelle Moore’s very existence is blasphemy. Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement.

But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood.

Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her.
